𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐨𝐰: 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐠 P̸A̸C̸ 𝐇𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧

We are done with people saying things like, “𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑡𝑤𝑜 ‘𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑠’ 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑎𝑚𝑒.”

No, we are not. And we never were.

𝐖𝐞, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐬, 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐩 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞, lying about, vilifying and attacking those he deemed “enemies,” attempting in the most crass possible ways to destroy their livelihoods and reputations.

𝐖𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭-𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a campaign to vilify and harass local councilmembers. A campaign that included calling them names, posting ugly memes, and being divisive and caustic at every turn….without presenting one solution to the problems they complained about. (Well, they did suggest “getting rid of the homeless,” an initiative embraced by the people whose office they purchased. Nevermind those actions violated people’s constitutional rights and landed us in the middle of another costly lawsuit.)

𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐰, 𝐚𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐞, 𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐧, 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 “𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐲.”

We had just begun to write about the hysterical rhetoric coming from the “safe Chico” people regarding Councilmember Scott Huber taking a summer job out of state when the news broke this morning. Scott was forced to resign his job because people from Chico were emailing, calling and threatening his employer.

𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧:

𝐀 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭-𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐀𝐂 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐫. Safe Chico actually ran a paid ad that included a link to his employer, while denying they instigated these actions - see first pic. At least one Chico woman, Yvonne, called his employer to tell them she would leave negative Yelp reviews if they didn’t get rid of him. Misty Tanner, a local union rep and close friend of Chico City Councilmember Kasey Reynolds, threatened not only to leave negative reviews for the business that employed him, but also said she would “spread the word to her union brothers and sisters to boycott them.” For a small business with a dozen yelp reviews, it was too much too ask, and Scott resigned from the job.

It didn’t end there. Scott’s wife was doxed by Nichole Nava in her One Chico forum (now gone private so that people can’t take screenshots of this behavior), and her workplace and home address shared. Out of concern for his family, Scott resigned his Chico City Council position as well. You can hear Scott talk about his experiences and the reasons for his resignation in a discussion with Sue Hilderbrand on The Real Issue.

The Chico ER condemned this behavior, as did Butte County Democrats, and yet the only councilmember to speak out was Alex Brown.

We cannot continue to ignore this behavior. It is tearing apart the fabric of our community, deterring good people from public service, and destroying lives.

We need your help to fight back.

Stand Up for Chico is a grassroots organization, run by volunteers. We want our community back. We want a town where a disagreement doesn't mean promoting vitriol and hatred. We want a town were someone can engage in public service without attempts to destroy their livelihood.

If you can afford to chip in $5, $20, $100, or even a small amount monthly, we promise you we will use that money to promote initiatives that reflect our shared values, not hatred.

Of course, "safe" Chico, led by Teri Dubose and cheered on by Rob Berry, Nichole Nava and a few other self-styled extremist “leaders” are taking no responsibility. “We never directed anyone to contact Scott’s employer,” Teri says, while allowing post comments like those below, encouraging people to do just that. Nava even went so far as to share Scott's wife’s name and the location of their home.

Every councilmember other than Scott Huber is self-employed. Imagine the consequences for them if we encouraged people to destroy their businesses because we didn’t like something they were doing.

This is unacceptable; it is despicable to attempt to ruin someone for serving in public office while not sharing your opinions.
