A Shout Out to Councilmember Alex Brown, Council Appointee Interviews

On Tuesday evening the council moved ahead with interviewing appointees for the two Chico City Council vacancies.

This is the first time the Council has had two vacancies to fill at the same time since the 1800’s! These positions opened up when Scott Huber was forced to resign both his job and council position because of harassment by local extremists, and Denlay resigned under a cloud of suspicion after if was found that she had decamped to Red Bluff shortly after being sworn in. (The council and city clerk’s office continue to ignore the growing outcry for a full investigation into whether Denlay committed voter fraud) With all this in mind, it was no surprise that the 4-1 conservative majority plans to control the appointments.

Councilmember Alex Brown was the only councilmember to publicly condemn the harassment of Huber, and the only one to join us in calling for a special election to replace these councilmembers. She was also the only councilmember who came prepared with questions for the applicants Tuesday - asking relevant questions regarding their priorities and thoughts on funding those priorities. The other councilmembers stuck to finding out if the appointees might be a threat to their positions - we kid you not, the only question asked every candidate by Mayor Coolidge was if they intended to run in the next election. It would be funny if it wasn’t so horrifying.

It’s with all this in mind that we are feeling particularly grateful for Alex’s work this week. She has stayed the course and advocate steadily for pragmatic, ethical solutions, despite the ignorance and harassment that have been lobbed her way these past two years.

One of her most important initiatives was her work on a Green New Deal for our beloved Chico. Our federal representative denies global warming; the rest of our city councilors ignore it. And all the while, throughout our region, fires burn and wells run dry. We appreciate Alex’s focused efforts more than ever. Our hearts break for all who are losing so much in this catastrophe as too many leaders are doing nothing. (Yo--Other Councilors! The plan is RIGHT THERE. Implement it!)

Alex knows it’s her job to honestly work on the hardest problems we face. Despite the loud, unhinged, and unethical campaigns against the homeless by local social media groups, Alex has remained steadfast and focused in her efforts to humanely support our unhoused neighbors. For this, we thank her.

We need more councilors like Alex so we can mitigate global warming for future generations and make local government work for all of us, not just developers.
