We wanted to to take a moment to update you on the clearance of the homeless from camps.

The area at the entrance to Bidwell Park has been cleared out completely. It appears that many of those folks have moved to the Triangle, the area where Cypress and Pine merge. Unfortunately, that area is also going to be cleared out soon.

Don Taylor (Butte County Housing and Homeless Administrator), working with Joy Amaro from the Torres Shelter/True North was able to obtain\allocate some funding for some additional motel rooms.

We've heard a few different numbers, but between 10 and 16 rooms became available last week, which was theoretically enough to accomodate the people who remained camped at the entrance to the park at that time. (Total number cleared from that area is over 60)

The plan is to offer those hotel rooms with some stipulations: Their belongings will be taken to storage, and they will be quarantined there for 2 weeks and then be required to enter the Torres shelter.

This is great news for some who are a good fit for that type of program, and we want to express our gratitude to Don and Joy for the work they did on the fly to pull this together.

With 60 people evicted from that single area, and up to 16 rooms available with a required two week stay before entry to Torres, it will be months before even the people who have already been evicted can be accomodated.

Despite an unusually warm weekend, it is still January, with cold weather and rain due in coming weeks. Forcing people to move with only what they can carry in the dead of winter is not only cruel, but creates a vector for the spread of disease during a pandemic.
