Eviction notices went out to multiple sites where people are camping on Friday.

While we can all agree that unmanaged camping in the parks is not a good solution (we shouldnโt even have to keep saying this, but we do), far worse is the fact that the council is evicting people who have literally nowhere else to go, and in the dead of winter.
Almost as bad is that the city council, in a fit of piqued inhumanity, has made camping in the parks a misdemeanor instead of an infraction - meaning people can be cited and booked at the jail as well as fined. One homeless man who was cited last year was fined $450+ for this offense, an insurmountable cost for most people living on the streets.
In addition, the jail is overcrowded and they will likely be released the following day โ typically between midnight and 2am, in Oroville, with no way to get back to their meager belongings.
If they are actually held at the jail, Butte County jail remains a hotbed of COVID-19 infections (26 active infections as of mid-December), so if they werenโt sick going in, thereโs a high likelihood they will be sick going out. Not only does this affect the health of the person in question, but it puts them back in the community, and constantly on the move to evade police, dramatically increasing the likelihood of spreading the disease.

The current council is ignoring national health guidelines intended to keep us all safe during this pandemic. It is also ignoring the plight of unhoused community members who are powerless at this time to make other choices, given that no legal camping nor shelter is available.
This action, taken without a single alternative location available for those without homes, is cruel and reprehensible.
We have created an โIdeaโ on Chicoโs Engaged website: Please take a moment to vote for the idea and add comments. We will ensure that this is sent to the council and key city staff.
