Great News Friday:

The judge extended the restraining order against the city of Chico and had some harsh words for them:

โ€œThe ordinances on their face, theyโ€™re invalid.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re criminalizing people, which is a direct violation of Martin v. Boise because they donโ€™t have a place to live.โ€

He gave the city 3 weeks to work on solutions with the plaintiffs.

He also chastised city officials for trying to appease constituents instead of educating them. He pointed out that the issue is not unique to our city, and that constituents donโ€™t seem to understand the reality of the situation or the laws.

No wonder, given that the council has been gaslighting citizens, saying there is plenty of shelter available and that there is no shelter crisis. We need real leadership, humane and effective solutions, and thanks to the judge, we may finally get that.

The outcome of this case wonโ€™t solve the problems of the city, but it definitely makes clear we need solutions and that the city will face costly penalties without them.

Time for solutions.
