Crimes Don’t Increase in Chico Neighborhoods With Low-Barrier Shelter

A new study shows that crimes not only didn’t increase in Chico neighborhoods when Safe Space Winter Shelter hosted their rotating low-barrier shelter there, but in some cases they actually went down.

The study, Analysis of Crime Around Safe Space Locations – Community Report, was done by Jennifer Wilking, Greg Madonia and Peter Hansen. They analyzed 4-years worth of arrest records and calls within 500 meters of Safe Space locations, from 2015 - 2019.

The results are clear. There was simply no increase in crime.

The city of Chico desperately needs low-barrier shelter. For those that worry about an increase in crime in the community, this is a good initial indicator that sheltering can be done safely with minimal impact to the surrounding neighborhood.
