(And a place we CAN support her, because building community still matters)

The conservative PAC has been claiming that Deepika Tandon is non-partisan for a month or so now, and have sent out mailers to that effect.

Unfortunately, that simply is not true.

Deepika, who has been a registered Republican for many years, as well as an avid Trump supporter, changed her party registration from Republican to no preference early this summer, in preparation for her city council run.

Deepika has not been shy about sharing her beliefs online either. See pics for some of her pro-trump, anti-progressive posts.

Check out the cartoon she posted this March โ€“ want to know what she really thinks of progressives?

We were especially disturbed by her post about gender inclusivity; "Teach Kids to Change Gears, Not Genders." We will never be ok with jokes about transgender folx. Period.

That's just one reason why these types of jokes are not funny. You can learn more about how to support transgender and non-binary folx here: The Trevor Project Know better, do better, friends.

This change of registration from Republican to no preference was calculated to help her run for council in a district that is historically progressive. Period.

Also disturbing is her support of obstructionism/NIMBYism. While she gives lip service to wanting to issues around homelessness, she was active in obstructing a low barrier shelter that could have housed up to 150 homeless people back in 2018, using grant money from Walmart โ€“ so it would have cost the city nothing. Orange Street Shelter was a collaboration between service providers and Butte County Health Department. It would have included not only shelter but services, and was model project, both in scope of collaboration and breadth of services. 150 people could have been off the streets today had the project not been obstructed. Saying sheโ€™s concerned about homelessness now is disingenuous at best.

Deepika lacks the knowledge and experience required to understand the reality of the needs of the community. She has no history of volunteerism, and hasnโ€™t served in any capacity with any non-profits, unlike Rich Ober, who has a long history of working directly to serve our community and lift people out of poverty and homelessness. If she has ever so much as spoken at a city council meeting, we canโ€™t find a record of it.

Hereโ€™s what we can support though.

Deepika owns Guzzetti's Catering and Indian Food. You may have seen her at the Farmerโ€™s Market, or seen her products at New Earth Market, amongst other places. Pumpkin and Spinach Parathaโ€ฆyum.

So letโ€™s continue to support (and educate) Deepika. Check in with her at the Farmers Market, try some tasty food, introduce yourself and perhaps talk to her about some of these issues so she can learn and better contribute to community solutions.

Just donโ€™t vote for her for City Council.
