Ask the Chico City Council to Allocate $350,000 to Safe Space Winter Shelter for Shelter and Services on November 17th
Unfortunately, no one who was elected to the Chico City Council has proposed any realistic solutions, only additional criminalization of those living on our streets, and this means that our advocacy for solutions will become that much more critical in the next two years.

Safe Space Winter Shelter has invested heavily in access to the old EDD building on Carmichael. The building, even during a pandemic, could provide shelter for up to 150 people.
This is critical for several reasons, not the least because if they do not get access to this building, there will be no winter shelter option for people living on the streets this year. Safe Space will not be able to provide a rotating shelter as they have in the past.
They need approximately $350,000 to make this a reality, and that money in combination with what they already have, will provide 6 months of sheltering and services. It also buys them time to work on permanent housing solutions and to seek additional funding.
This is not only the most humane thing we can do for people on the streets, it is also a benefit for the community. It offers a place for people to go outside the parks and greenways and puts them in touch with service providers who can provide case management and housing navigation.
It's just the right thing to do.
As people are cleared from encampments and the temperatures drop, the likelihood that more people will die on our streets this winter increases exponentially. It is very realistic to request that the Chico City Council appropriate this funding at their next meeting on the 17th, and ensure that organizations like Safe Space have a chance to house people in coming months, as the new council majority ramps up policing of an already vulnerable population.
What can you do? We need to have a massive outreach campaign to the sitting councilmembers who could vote for this initiative, and it needs to happen fast.
We have created an idea on the Chico Engaged Website; please go there and upvote the idea, as well as leave comments on it for the Council. You can do that here: Request the Chico City Council Appropriate Funding for Safe Space Winter Shelter

Itโs a chance for the current council to secure a legacy of doing good for the community, and one last chance to protect people living on the streets.
