A Welcome Message

When I moved to Chico as a kid, it was still a small town of around 20,000 people. It was an idyllic place to grow up. Long hot summers spent in the creeks and parks and canyons, good schools and teachers who cared, a strong sense of shared values and community.

Chico had already grown a lot in 2018, and with the addition of another 15000 people in the wake of the Camp Fire, our community has expanded more quickly than we were prepared to handle. Our infrastructure is taxed, already high housing prices soared, and the entire community has struggled to keep up with the pace of change. This unprecedented growth, coupled with the trauma experienced by Camp Fire survivors and the community at large has begun to erode the sense of place and community that makes Chico so special.

Our country is more divided than it has ever been before. But Chico doesn’t have to be. We have some challenges, but we also still live in a beautiful, vibrant community, with parks and thriving, distinctive local businesses that so many of us love. Our essential character is intact.

In the coming months, Stand Up For Chico plans to spotlight many of the people, places and things that make Chico such a wonderful place to live, work and recreate. We plan to focus on what’s going right, and to work together on real solutions for the things we’d like to see improved.

I hope you will join us. Chico is a great place to live, and together we can make it even better. It’s time to Stand Up for Chico.
