ACLU NorCal Joins the Fight in Chico

We are pleased the ACLU has joined Stand Up for Chico in calling out the Chico City Council’s Brown Act Violations.

Press Release: ACLU Calls Out Chico’s City Council for Criminalizing Unhoused People and for Violations of the Brown Act

ACLU NorCal has also expanded on our concerns, including secret meetings between councilmembers and public officials which resulted in the allocation of funding to a right-wing “charity” that has recently sprung up.

They cited multiple instances of the city violating the 8th Amendment rights of people living on our streets, saying, “The effects are disastrous and cruel. By sweeping encampments and enforcing ordinances that punish sleeping, sitting, lying, resting, and even having belongings in public, the City is destabilizing the precarious position of its unhoused residents, penalizing their very existence.”
