We didn't know the full extent of the Brown Act Violations committed by the Chico City Council when we sent our letter demanding they "cure and correct" their illegal actions of the April 6th City Council Meeting.
As the ACLU NorCal letter made clear yesterday, it has gone much further than we realized. We are heartened that the ACLU has joined us in calling out this malfeasance and hopeful it will lead to meaningful action. Details and full ACLU letter here.
And yet, as the evidence piles up, Morgan doubles down on gaslighting the community.
Despite this action being on video and available for public viewing, Sean's comments to the Chico ER yesterday included outright lying about what he and the council did:
"Morgan also attacked the organization [ACLU NorCal] for its allegations about the April 6 vote to rescind the shelter crisis declaration, repeating previous comments he made to this newspaper.
โWe want to go back and talk about the thing we didnโt do, and I say what? That doesnโt make any sense. We canโt talk about what we did โcause we didnโt do it." Read the Full Story from the Chico ER
What actually happened after the vote was that the county and service providers informed City staff and councilmembers that what they had done would take funding away from providers who had received it as a result of the declaration, as well as limit future funding. City staff scrambled for a way out, and finally informed the councilmembers the vote was invalid after all, because they would need to rescind the shelter crisis declaration with a โresolutionโ rather than a motion.
So of course, the council did not succeed with that motion, saved from their folly by the creativity of their staff, after they had already voted. But yes, they did โdo it.โ
Is there anything that will compel the Council to stop lying to us and get real about solving the problems the community faces? Or will the city continue to spend untold dollars defending illegal actions? It looks as if Sean has his way, it will be the latter.
Video below includes Sean's discussion during the April 6th Chico City Council meeting, where he makes clear he is voting with the council majority to rescind the Emergency Shelter Crisis Declaration. It also includes the actual vote.
