The Butte County Democratic Party and Stand Up for Chico statements on the recent resignations of two Chico City Council members, and the importance of the council respecting our Democracy and holding a special election to fill these seats.

Stand Up for Chico Statement:

Good afternoon, I’m Morgan Kennedy representing Stand Up for Chico. Thank you for joining us today at these iconic Chico hands. These hands represent community and unity. Both have been in short supply in our beloved town for some time now.

If Kami Denlay’s resignation was submitted because she lives outside of Chico and was afraid of consequences for this, then her resignation is a good thing for our city. If she submitted her resignation, however, because of harassment, as she claims, we condemn it. Harshly. Ugly harassment like the type endured by Scott Huber last week is what prevents good people from participating in public service. Stand Up For Chico condemns harassment of anyone who makes a life in our city.

We the People elected councilmembers Scott Huber and Kami Denlay. And We the People deserve to elect their replacements. We call on the remaining Chico City Council members to respect our community and our democracy and schedule a special election to fill these vacancies as soon as possible.

We would like to thank the Butte County Democratic Party for inviting us to join them today. We are proud to join them in insisting the Chico City Council respect our citizens and our democracy. Stand Up for Chico is and always has been about fairness and giving a voice to all Chicoans.
