Curtis Pahlka is Our Pick for Chico City Council District 1
Curtis Pahlka is a longtime resident who brings a wealth of local knowledge, as well as being the only candidate with any law enforcement experience. He ran because he was concerned, as are we, about the divisiveness and ugliness in the community. He spent 10 years in law enforcement doing dispatch and evidence management, and now serves as the Director of Clery & Compliance Training at CSUC. He brings a healthy and nuanced view of policing that balances an understanding of the work with concerns about the overall health of the community.
Pahlka also supports evidence-based solutions for homelessness, including permanent supportive housing, rapid-rehousing and the creation of affordable housing. All of these issues will be key for the health of our community in coming years. Sean Morgan has been on the council since 2012, and as mayor he led the push to criminalize homelessness and went on record as saying, “the best thing we could do would be to provide NO services so they would leave.” His comments show a lack of understanding about homelessness or the work service providers do, and it’s long past time for change.
