A lot of folks ask us about signs. Is that sign legal? How many can you have? How big? We thought weโd take a few minutes to clear that up today.
Chicoโs campaign sign ordinance is actually pretty simple. Here is the applicable code if itโs residential:

So basically, for residential property, no sign can be more than 4 sq feet, the maximum number of signs is four, and they canโt be higher than six feet.
No signs are allowed on public property, such as medians, setbacks, bus stops, etc. per the city ordinance:

Thatโs it. If you see signs that are not in compliance, you can report them to code enforcement. Note the address, and report using one of several a options available her๏ฟผe: https://chico.ca.us/pod/report-complaint
๐๐ฆ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐๐ง๐ญ: even if signs are placed illegally, do not remove or damage the signs yourself; you are required to have code enforcement deal with the issue.

Those signs (see examples in pics) are just shy of 16 sq ft, or 4 times the size allowed by the city ordinance. They knew the sign ordinance - we all do. Itโs provided to folks who are campaigning and readily accessible on the city site. They chose to have extra large signs made because they donโt care about flaunting the law when it suits them.
