California requires all local governments to plan to meet the housing needs of ๐๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฒ๐จ๐ง๐ in the community.
Chico meets this requirement by adopting 'Housing Elements' as part of the city General Plan. The General Plan serves as the local governmentโs "blueprint" for how the city will grow and develop over a 15-20 year period, and the Housing Element won't be updated again for another decade or so.
๐๐ก๐ข๐๐จ ๐๐๐ฌ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐๐ญ๐๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ง๐๐๐๐ฌ ๐๐๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ . We do not need what the Chico Chamber and Chico Builders Association are pushing, which is more high-end, detached single-family homes to attract people from the Bay Area. Yep. They actually said that - we kid you not. From the article in the Chico ER:
โChico chamber President Katy Thoma said the chamber has mostly heard a need for higher-level housing from key recruiters Enloe Medical Center and Chico State, considered the primary hiring draws in the city. She added her connections with the real estate market have confirmed there is โa migration of people from urban areas that are from higher income areas.โ
At a time when many long-time Chicoans are being priced out of the market and more poor people are landing on our streets, local developers want to create high-end homes to draw people from the Bay Area.
