City and County (Finally) Warn Off Vigilante Leader

The Butte County DA made it very clear that Rob did not understand the law under which he intended to conduct โcitizens arrests,โ saying there was nothing wrong with helping people move their stuff.

Chico PD and Chief Matt Madden (albeit after being pressured for a response by many citizens, requests from multiple news organizations, and city leadership), finally issued a press release too, cagey though it is.
This puts Madden in a tough spot. Chico PD is Berryโs darling, and Madden handpicked him for the Police Chiefโs โCitizens Advisory Committee,โ which is supposed to be a way for the community to provide some input into local policies. With all the members of the group cherry-picked by Madden, no public meetings nor report-outs, and no Brown Act Compliance, the group basically amounts to a laudatory body. Berryโs expressed his sentiments about this back when Councilmember Kasey Reynolds appointed him to the Ad Hoc Police Committee (now defunct) created by Ann Schwab, where he stated that โthe committeeโs purpose should be showing โhow professional and well trained the police are.โ
So itโs certainly no wonder that Madden is hesitant to rein in the man. Time to add the creation of an actual Citizens Oversight Committee to our agenda.
