We wanted to to take a moment to update you on the clearance of the homeless from camps.

The area at the entrance to Bidwell Park has been cleared out completely. It appears that many of those folks have moved to the Triangle, the area where Cypress and Pine merge. Unfortunately, that area is also going to be cleared out soon…

It was 53° when Chico PD came to clear out the campers in Bidwell Park yesterday, and in the late morning, as they scrambled to gather their meager belongings, it began to rain.

In their first two council meetings, the new council has moved forward on enhancing criminal penalties for camping, and removing campers from the parks. (They have also, inexplicably, hurried through an ordinance that will get your car impounded if you are caught soliciting – not seeing a ton of crime reports on that one, but, um…I digress.)

We wish there were a lot of new information to catch you up on regarding what the city, county and service providers are doing to provide legal alternatives for those camping, but there simply isn’t much. As it stands, there is no shelter in Chico is accepting new clients, and there will be no temporary winter shelter….
