A CLIMATE DYSTOPIA IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
โEven in California, where the lack of affordable housing has reached epidemic levels in Los Angeles and San Francisco, Chico โ an outdoorsy college town โ stands out for the ruthlessness with which its city government and police have turned on unhoused residents...

All over Chico, individuals and organizations are working to make things better. More often than it should, that labor is done quietly, out of sight, and unsupported.
At Stand Up for Chico, we've highlighted a lot of problems in the community, so we've decided this month will be dedicated to solutions.

We didn't know the full extent of the Brown Act Violations committed by the Chico City Council when we sent our letter demanding they "cure and correct" their illegal actions of the April 6th City Council Meeting.
As the ACLU NorCal letter made clear yesterday, it has gone much further than we realized. We are heartened that the ACLU has joined us in calling out this malfeasance.
ACLU NorCal Joins the Fight in Chico
We are pleased the ACLU has joined Stand Up for Chico in calling out the Chico City Councilโs Brown Act Violations.
Press Release: ACLU Calls Out Chicoโs City Council for Criminalizing Unhoused People and for Violations of the Brown Act ๏ปฟ
ACLU NorCal has also expanded on our concerns, including secret meetings between councilmembers and public officials which resulted in the allocation of funding to a right-wing โcharityโ that has recently sprung up.
An Open Letter to the Chico City Council Regarding Solutions for Homelessness
The first few Homeless Solutions Ad Hoc meetings have left us guardedly optimistic. The council appears to be on the right track and earnestly seeking real solutionsโฆ.
Letโs work together to protect the parks, greenways and quality of life we already love about Chico, while living up to our shared values of justice, kindness, equality and opportunity for all of our citizens.

During the Chico City Council closed session meeting Monday night to discuss the homeless evictions lawsuit against the city, a decision was made to create an Ad Hoc Committee and invite groups of stakeholders to give input and look at potential solutions.
Councilmember Reynolds, Cancel Culture, and Eliminating Our Local Paper
Last week, federal judge Morris England extended the Temporary Restraining Order that prevents the City of Chico from evicting people from homeless encampments.
During the hearing, England told Chico City Attorney Vince Ewing, โI think the constituency needs to be educated about what the law is.โ England also suggested that the City address the misinformation being spread through various social media outlets.
Little did England know that Chico Vice Mayor Kasey Reynolds is helping to spread this misinformation and even calls on her constituents to CANCEL the Enterprise Record, a source of information independent from local government.
Alex Brown and Scott Huber Press Conference - Call for Homeless Solutions
Councilmembers Alex Brown and Scott Huber spoke on the ongoing shelter crisis, the potential impacts of the lawsuit against the city over evictions, as well as the impact of rescinding or failing to renew the Emergency Shelter Crisis Declaration.
There was a good turnout, many people were interested in hearing what they had to say and are alarmed by the ongoing evictions of the unhoused.
It may be a little hard to hear in places, someone kept setting off their car alarm and a few obnoxious people got loud and aggressive. After one was escorted away things settled down.
